The Avengers The Avengers (1998) UK Rating

Jim Broadbent plays Mother  Also starring Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurman, Sean Connery, Eddie Izzard

"Tea, anyone?"

Plot Summery:  The very dapper British Ministry agent John Steed (Ralph Fiennes), under direction from "Mother" (Jim Broadbent), investigates a diabolical plot by arch-villain Sir August de Wynter (Sean Connery) to rule the world with his weather control machine.  Steed investigates the sexily catsuited Mrs. Emma Peel (Uma Thurman), the only suspect, but falls for her and joins forces with her to combat Sir August.

Patrick's comments: Jim in his chain-smoking, macaroon-eating, wheel-chair bound, role as 'Mother' gets another chance at one of those typically English roles that he is so well loved for.  For me, this film was doubly well loved as the scene with the Teddy Bears was filmed at Lloyds of London where I used to work.  Keep and eye out for those glass elevators and all those crazy pipes on the roof!  Oh, yes... and if the film is thirdly well loved (and we haven't even mentioned sexily catsuited Uma Thurman yet!) it would be because favourite stand up comedian Eddie Izzard stars in a Mini driving car chase.  That Mini is now owned by John Marsh at Lincoln Mini Centre would you believe?  And remember, "Nothing's impossible Father. I often think of six impossible things before breakfast"
